Best Ways to Keep a Smile Bright

Jan 30 • 2 minute read

Everyone should have a bright, healthy smile, and the best way to achieve one is by having an effective dental care routine. Dedicating the time to maintaining teeth and gums helps preserve aesthetic and dental function. With beautiful teeth and full bite function, people can showcase their smile without having to be self-conscious.

Dr. Mariano Castro from Smileneeds Dental provides patients with the following tips to help keep their teeth at their best:

When You’re at Home

Your at-home oral care routine has the biggest impact on your dental health and aesthetic. Having an efficient and effective hygiene routine continuously protects your smile from developing oral concerns or losing its luminosity. It is recommended to brush and floss twice a day, once before going to bed and again after waking up to start your day. By performing these simple tasks consistently, you remove plaque and leftover food particles, decrease the chances of cavities forming, and halt the spread of tooth decay.  Patients who do not brush their teeth on a regular basis increase their chance of developing an infection or other complications that would require complex treatments.

Your Everyday Diet

Sugar-it is the substance that every parent told their child not eat too much of as it causes cavities and tooth decay. Sugar and other simple carbohydrates are a food source for oral bacteria, allowing them to thrive. When bacteria consume sugar, they excrete an acid that eats away at your dental enamel which causes tooth decay.

To keep your smile a bright shade of white, it is best to avoid dark-colored foods and beverages. These can discolor the surface of your enamel and may be difficult to remove with regular brushing and flossing. Coffee, red wine, beets, grape juice, and dark sodas are a few food and beverages known to cause stains when consumed.

Attending Dental Appointments

If any oral concerns were to arise, your dentist can detect and treat these issues before they become a bigger problem. This makes attending your biannual check-ups and cleanings essential to preserving the health of your smile. Your dental professional can recommend techniques and offer advice on how to properly maintain your teeth and gums. If you have any aesthetic or functional concerns regarding, talking to your dentist during your regular appointments allows them to create a treatment plan designed to meet your dental needs.
